DESCRIPTION

In the context of the European Union’s ambitious Mission “Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities,” cities are increasingly recognized as pivotal players in driving innovation and experimentation toward a sustainable future amidst escalating energy costs and environmental challenges. The European Commission supports sustainable urban transition catalysing collective efforts to transform cities into hubs for experimentation. Acting as role models for innovation and co-creation, cities are encouraged to align with the mission’s objectives to emulate by 2025.

This side event, co-organized by the European projects oPEN Lab, 2ISECAP, LIFE-BECKON, and SWEET Lantern, and ENoLL’s Energy & Environment Working Group, aligns with this commitment. It represents an innovative scale-up challenge aimed at catalysing transformative change in the energy transition landscape within neighbourhoods and cities, fostering collaboration and transnational exchange in pursuit of sustainable energy and climate solutions.

Set against the backdrop of the OpenLivingLab Days conference “LIVING LABS FRONTIERS: Driving systemic change through Soci(et)al Engagement, for real impact”, which will be co-hosted by the European Network of Living Labs (ENoLL) and the University of West Timisoara (UVT) in 24-27 September in Timisoara, Romania, this side event serves as a platform for bringing together researchers, innovators, and policymakers to explore existing and emerging approaches to climate and energy transitions.

Through dynamic discussions, knowledge exchange, and collaborative initiatives, we aim to create synergies that will pave the way for broader exploitation and replication of successful climate and energy transition models.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

This side event aims to foster collaboration, innovation, and knowledge sharing in the clean energy transition landscape, aligning closely with the EU Mission “Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities.” By fostering stronger collaboration among stakeholders, it intends to cultivate a supportive ecosystem, driving broader-scale change and accelerating the climate and energy transition by co-creating sustainable solutions. Through actionable insights and innovative approaches, the event aims to expedite the adoption of successful models such as Positive Energy Neighbourhoods and Energy Communities.

It also aims to support cities in translating theoretical concepts into practical implementation, directly contributing to the EU Mission’s objective of fostering innovation hubs in all European cities by 2050. Strengthening links between EU initiatives is intended as a pivotal outcome, fostering greater cohesion and collaboration in the transition ecosystem. The event also aims at highlighting how ENoLL is supporting these efforts through its Living Labs and advocacy activities.

FORMAT

The side event “Energizing Tomorrow: Collaborative Innovations for Clean Energy Transition” will serve as an interactive platform for advancing clean energy solutions. The morning session will begin with a project showcase featuring presentations from oPEN Lab, 2ISECAP, LIFE Beckon, and SWEET Lantern, highlighting innovative approaches and key findings. This will be followed by a high-level panel discussion on strategic climate and energy transition policies.

In the afternoon, thematic presentations and strategic debates will focus on Energy Coalitions, Positive Energy Neighborhoods, and comprehensive climate and energy strategies. The event will conclude with an open space marketplace, where participants can engage directly with project representatives, explore solutions, and network.

Join us in this journey toward a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
