DESCRIPTION
Presenters will discuss the systemic approach within the EU Missions “Soil”, “Oceans” and “Cities”, and the challenge of the assessment of the impact. The EU Missions, a crucial component of the Horizon Europe programme, embody a systemic approach to addressing major societal challenges. The systemic approach is critical to create a coordinated efforts that go beyond traditional policy and research boundaries. This approach is reflected in initiatives that actively involve communities in decision-making processes, ensuring that the Missions’ goals align with public needs and values such as Living Labs. Overall, the implementation of a systemic approach in the EU Missions. Yet, assessing the effectiveness of the systemic approach poses methodological and theoretical challenges: the session aims to present the current status of the debate.

Full professor, Department of Design, Politecnico di Milano, ItalyProf. Francesca Rizzo is full professor at Politecnico di Milano, where she also serves as the Rectors’ delegate for European Projects. She published numerous books and articles on public management innovation and co-design. She is the principal investigator of several EU-funded projects and is heavily involved with the NetZeroCities project.

Coordinator of the SOILL-Startup ProjectSince joining ENoLL in 2022, Giulia has coordinated the preparation of more than 40 proposals to European funding opportunities, with more than 30% of success rate as partner and 100% success rate as Coordinator. Alongside, Giulia is supporting the implementation of the 20 active projects of the organization and coordinating the SOILL and SOILL-Startup projects supporting the Mission Soil Health Living Labs. Before ENoLL, she has led for 9 years the EU proposals team of the Italian Institute of Technology where she coordinated the preparation of 80+ collaborative projects proposals per year in various applied research themes as Robotics & AI, Computation, Smart and nano materials, and Life sciences. She is also an experienced trainer on EU affairs and EU funding, bridging her hands-on experience on proposal and project management with deep knowledge of the EU policy landscape. She is project manager of BlueMissionMed CSA “Supporting the Mediterranean Sea basin for the implementation of the EU Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters†aimed at setting up, structuring and empowering a multi-actors ecosystem able to offer to the Mediterranean stakeholders the knowledge and tools to protect and restore the health of our Ocean and waters.

She has been a public servant at Turin Municipality since 2005. She worked for the Environmental Division on environmental impact assessment, soil remediation, Integrated Environmental Authorisation. Now she is in charge of smart-city projects in the field of environmental adaptation, mitigation strategies, Nature Based Solutions, and circular economy.

He has published more than 30 papers in reputed journals, and he is associate editor of Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing and European Research on Management and Business Economics. As Principal Investigator of the research group OE7 is participating in several European, National and Regional research projects, dealing with competitiveness, business models, networks and regional development.

With a PSSD (Product-Service System Design) background, Morgan is implementing design research methodologies to study learning for capability building, collective sensemaking, and systemic change. As part of her EU-funded research, Morgan is heavily involved in the NetZeroCities project.
